Project objectives were achieved as stated in the Friends of the D. T. Fleming Arboretum (FOFA) grant proposal. An Arboretum Inventory Data Base was created including scientific name, Hawaiian name, distribution status, island occurrence, Federal protective status, origin of material, planting date, location code.

An Arboretum Map was created locating each plant by location code.

The Inventory Database was done on an Excel Spread, easily updated and column order adjusted as needed.

A plant coding system was created indicating block, species and number of plants. A “Replacement Protocol” was included as a users guide to maintain an updated plant inventory, plant research and maintenance records.

There were challenges and unexpected benefits with a new coding system designed to add or delete plants without alternating the coding of existing species. An additional unexpected benefit, rather than the previous individual maps of each block, a 16” x 20” map of the entire Arboretum was drawn. It is framed under glass, hanging in the Arboretum cabin along with the 16” x 20” poster of plant identification relating to map coding. The professional presentation by native plant botanist, Robert Hobdy, is an impressive accomplishment for the Arboretum.

An expected benefit is there are now plant inventory totals. The D. T. Fleming Arboretum protects 245 plants of 103 species. The Arboretum protects 18 “Endangered Species, “ 4 “Species of Concern” and 3 “Candidates” on the Federal Protection List.

The Budget matched FOFA’s original grant request for $3,000. On January 4, 2006, check number 427 was drafted for $3,000 to Robert Hobdy. It took Bob more time and visits to the Arboretum than he anticipated, but there was no additional charge.

How the project will be self-sustaining: FOFA volunteers and staff will manage inventory updates as the Arboretum expands, increasing species populations as well as adding new species for a more complete collection of Maui’s dryland forest. This updated Inventory Database is the foundation for future research and maintenance records.

Included in our Final Report, is a hard copy of the Arboretum Inventory. To see the 2006 Arboretum map, please visit our website at www.flemingarboretum.org under “Grants.” To see the 2006 Arboretum Inventory in the website visit “Research.”

Thank you for this great accomplishment for the Arboretum. The overall impact is positive and impressive for volunteers, staff and organization, supporting FOFA’s preservation efforts.

FOFA would be proud to show off the many positive results of past Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation’s Grants. We would feel honored by a site visit from any board members and family.

Thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Martha Vockrodt – Moran FOFA President
